Green and sustainable

Thermae has made considerable efforts and investments over the years in an effort to reduce its ecological footprint.

  • Insulation:

Insulation has been a part of our investment strategy for years, but increasingly so since the pandemic.

This includes insulating all roofs and walls and optimising our hot water pipes.

The insulation in our freezer cells used to be 10 to 15 cm and is now 30 cm.

  • Optimal energy management:
    • Almost all of our operations are automated, which leads to substantial energy savings and more targeted operations in each zone.

Examples:

The boiler is set to a lower temperature for the majority of the day and night, which saves energy and reduces overall wear and tear.

The saunas, steam baths, and spas are also auto-regulated, ensuring optimal heating only when necessary.

    • Motion sensors were installed for the lights in the common staff areas (kitchen, laundry room, corridors, storage areas, etc.).

    • We also invested in condensing boilers, which are much more efficient than conventional gas boilers.
    • Both of our wellness centres have invested in combined heat and power (CHP), which uses gas to generate electricity and has the added benefit of producing an impressive amount of hot water.
    • Heat recovery ventilation systems were installed in several places.
    • Solar panels were installed where possible and permitted.
    • In addition, we installed geothermal  heat pumps.
    • Warm water storage is a key focus at both of our wellness centres. During peak times, the heating installations have to operate at full capacity, which consumes a large amount of energy. We therefore store thousands of litres of water during non-peak times to better manage energy consumption during peaks.
    • We also use surplus electrical energy from CHP and solar panels to generate hot water and minimise our dependence on fossil fuels.
    • Our newest Jacuzzis use a venturi system that draws in air without the use of an additional motor.
    • In our hotel rooms, guests are encouraged to reuse their towels.
  • Water management:
    • Rainwater buffer zones have been created to supply water to a significant portion of our restroom facilities.
    • All showerheads have been replaced with water-saving ones.
  • Waste is carefully separated into residual waste, organic and kitchen waste, plastic, glass, and paper and cardboard.
  • We encourage our employees to be as environmentally conscious as possible, to sort their waste, and to be mindful of unnecessary wastefulness.
  • Our restaurants no longer sell plastic water bottles. There are water fountains available near the thermal baths.
  • The shirts worn by our employees bear the GOTS label, the OEKO-TEX label and the Nordic Swan Ecolablel, and are Fairtrade Certified.
